About us

Behind the scenes of Czech balfolk, there is the Rond society and many dedicated hands and hearts. They organize, produce, teach, and most of all play and dance. Balfolk – that are dancers and musicians doing what they love for and with other dancers and musicians.

Rond: Balfolk, Brittany & Old Dances

In our grant applications, we state that “Rond preserves and develops European cultural heritage, mostly through dancing and music. The ambition is to bring dancing back to people’s everyday lives.” What does it mean in practice?

For more than fifteen years, Rond has been striving to help people dance more. To present dancing as a common activity which simply belongs to life. Just as it has been for ages. (Are you wondering why people don’t dance much these days? Maybe you know Ken Robinson’s famous talk. We believe that this is exactly what the talk is about.)

That’s why Rond goes back to the roots: in the Czech Republic, we spread balfolk, living European folklore which takes the best from folk tradition and adapts it to an appealing, modern form. We believe this to be the best way to make the world dance – in France and the rest of Europe, balfolk has enthralled hundreds of thousands of people. We also study various sources and old dances, belonging inseparably to the European dance tradition.

Rond organizes international festivals, dance evenings, concerts and other events, cooperating with musicians, bands and dancers from all over the world.

Mikuláš Bryan

Mikuláš studied theatre studies, but he tweaked it a little: his Master thesis was in fact about dancing. He was inquiring into dancing also during his PhD – before he left the studies to have more time for dancing. He spent a year in Brittany, where he joined the Astour folklore society. Despite his rich experience with blues, tango, lindy hop, salsa and other dances, Brittany dances and balfolk have captured his heart for good. Besides balfolk, he occasionally teaches also blues and old dances, both at international festivals and smaller seminars. Besides dancing and teaching balfolk, he also plays it – his various bands/projects (ba.fnu, BAL LAB, Yanyk and Mr. Folxlide) can be heard and seen both in the Czech Republic and at festivals and balls in France, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Belgium and other European countries. He created and managed the festivals Prague Balfolk Weekend and Prague Balfolk Immersion.

Martin Ozzy Chlebek

His dancing journey started with old dances in 2006, and through Brittany dances, he eventually got to balfolk. In 2016, he began to travel abroad for festivals and workshops, organize summer dance evenings at Vyšehrad and also started with zouk. He was one of the organizers of the New Year Eve’s Folk Marathon 2017/18 in Brno. He is in charge of leading our regular dance evenings in KP Smíchov and at Vyšehrad and teaching.

Zuzana Halamíčková

Her first encounter with balfolk happened in 2011 at Folk Marathon in Vienna, and she was charmed by its diversity. Being a Gemini, of course she cannot decide between the world of music and the world of dancing – and so she stands with one leg in each of them. She is mostly in charge of text-related tasks, including communication with foreign bands.

Eva Jedelská

She needs dancing to stay alive and tried various styles – but balfolk was love at first sight. For ten years already, she has been dedicating a lot of time and energy to it, and she is eager to show it to anyone who is willing to hold her hand and step with the music. She travels abroad for festivals and works on her skills at workshops both in the Czech Republic and in other countries. She is in charge of venues for balfolk events, phone calls about pretty much anything, grants and money in general.

Zuzana Oceláková

In summer 2018, she was looking for blues dance classes in Prague, and accidentally ended up at balfolk. She didn’t feel intrigued by it. But somehow she failed to stop going there, and thanks to didactic virtuosity of Mikuláš Bryan, group dances eventually won her heart (so much so that she often travels for them from her somewhat distant place of residence). She participates in the organization mainly by dreaming about courses and seminars she’d like to attend, and occasionally organizing some of them.

There are many others who help with organization of balfolk events, and above all the festival Prague Balfolk Weekend: Joan de Vries (communication with foreign bands, budget), Jiří Luňáček (web, Facebook, technical support), Johana Lišková (volunteers, merch), Alexandra Porada (graphics, decorations), and Oktawiusz Zawodnik (communication with foreign bands, festival bar).

Earlier we also cooperated with:

Eva Dryjová (production), Kateřina Beňová (teaching and organizing), Katka Bryanová, Tomáš Suchomel, Monika Lipska, Eivilė Šimeček.
